In psychoanalysis, a conscious, rational mode of mental functioning, based on the reality principle, involving bound energy. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) developed the concept at the beginning of his psychological work and expounded it at length in Chapter VII of his book The Interpretation of Dreams (1900, Standard Edition, IV-V).
