A psychological technique that helps an athlete to maintain concentration during endurance activities. The activity is broken down into manageable segments and realistic goals set for each one. A marathon runner, for example, may break down a race into kilometre segments and concentrate on maintaining a given pace determined separately for each kilometre, instead of aiming to achieve an overall time for the marathon.
