(b Pest (now Budapest), 1850; d NY, 1898). Hung. conductor. In 1872 went to Bayreuth where he made first copy of score of Der Ring des Nibelungen for Wagner and, in 1876, assisted at first fest. Cond., Leipzig Opera 1879–82. Toured Ger., Holland, Eng., and It. 1882 as cond. of Neumann's Wagner co. Cond. first Ring cycle in London, 1882 (Her Majesty's Th.). Cond. Bremen Opera 1883–5. Cond. of Ger. opera at NY Met from 1885. Cond. f. Amer. ps. of Die Meistersinger (1886), Tristan und Isolde (1886), and Ring (except Die Walküre) (1889). Cond. NYPO 1891–8. Cond. f.p. of Dvořák's New World Sym., 1893. CG début 1897.
