[Persian: ‘wind of 120 days’]

A strong north-westerly over eastern Iran and Afghanistan. It is associated with the summer monsoon low-pressure region over north-western India and begins in late May or early June, blowing almost continually until the end of September. It transports considerable quantities of sand and dust, which it deposits as large dunes. See also shamal.
