Brooklyn-born novelist whose fiction, set in his native area, is Last Exit to Brooklyn (1964), a vivid view of corruption and violence in contemporary urban life; The Room (1971), depicting the sadistic and sexual fantasies of a jailed prisoner; The Demon (1976), presenting a young businessman's “dark consciousness”and sexual impulses; and Requiem for a Dream (1978), about heroin addicts and others frustrated in their dreams.
