(b Greenville, Ala., 6 Mar. 1954)
US dancer and choreographer. He studied at the Merce Cunningham Studio and with Maggie Black, performing with several companies including Cunningham's (1976–9) and his own Self Performing Arts Company (1975–6), and Jim Self and Dancers (1980–8). He also choreographed and performed in Robert Wilson's The CIVIL WarS (1980–4). His movement style is partially influenced by Cunningham but his work is often categorized as performance art, due to its reliance on theatrical and visual elements. He has taught widely and in 1996 was appointed dance lecturer at Cornell University.
