self-assembly

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The process by which multimeric structures assemble from subunits (protomers) in a manner which is defined by the properties of the protomers, not by a template. In many cases (as with microtubules) the basic self-assembly process is regulated by initiation (nucleation) sites which determine where the multimers will form.
