A protein containing selenium, almost invariably as selenocysteine, although selenomethionine can occur, apparently as a random substitute for methionine. Well‐known selenoproteins include the mammalian glutathione peroxidases and tetraiodothyronine 5′‐deiodinase, and bacterial formate dehydrogenases and glycine reductase.
