The infinite use of finite elements. The structural feature of double articulation within a semiotic system allows an infinite number of meaningful combinations to be generated using a small number of low-level units. This key design feature is held to be the basis of the productivity and creative economy of verbal language. The English language has only about 40 or 50 elements of second articulation (phonemes) but these can generate hundreds of thousands of language signs.
