A Chinese Ch'an monk held to be the third patriarch of Ch'an after Bodhidharma (d. 532) and Hui-k'o (487–593). Historical records list him as a fairly minor disciple of the latter, having only studied with him for six years before being parted from him in the year 574 because of the general persecution of Buddhism. Otherwise, little is known about him for certain.
