An EEG rhythm of 12–14 hertz that is generated in the sensorimotor cortex. It was discovered in 1965 by the US neurobiologist M(aurice) Barry Sterman (born 1935) in an experiment on cats and is known to be associated with behavioural stillness and mental alertness.
