A cysteine protease related to the caspases (q.v.) that cleaves cohesin complexes and allows sister chromatids to separate and be drawn to opposite poles during the anaphase stage of mitosis (q.v.). During meiosis (q.v.) separase can only cleave those cohesin complexes that are not protected by Sgo (q.v.). See cohesin, sister chromatid cohesion.
