A fragment of dead (necrotic) bone which has become separated from living (vital) bone. Although rare, it can occur as a result of chronic osteomyelitis of the jaws, more commonly in the mandible. It can be associated with the formation of pus. Treatment is usually by surgical removal of the piece of dead bone (sequestectomy). See also osteonecrosis.
