An enzyme (SHMT, EC 2.1.2.1) that catalyses the reversible conversion of serine and tetrahydrofolate to glycine and 5,10-methylene tetrahydrofolate. The gene for the cytosolic enzyme (SHMT1, 444 and 483 aa isoforms) maps to the critical interval for Smith–Magenis syndrome. A mitochondrial form of the enzyme (SHMT2, 494 aa) also exists.
