A diverse clan of peptidases with a common reaction mechanism involving an active serine residue. Most are inhibited by serine peptidase inhibitors (serpins) and irreversibly inactivated by organophosphorus esters, such as di-isopropylfluorophosphate (DFP). Members of the clan include trypsin, chymotrypsin, and bacterial subtilisin.
