Quick Reference

A family of apolipoproteins (SAA, SAP) associated with high-density lipoprotein that are acute phase proteins. Partial proteolysis of serum amyloid A produces an N-terminal (1–76) fragment, amyloid A protein (AA protein) which forms the amyloid fibrils that are deposited in tissues in secondary amyloidosis. Amyloid P protein is derived from serum amyloid P, a pentraxin similar to C-reactive protein, and is a minor component of fibrils in both primary and secondary amyloidosis.
