A family of homologous enzymes which require the amino acid serine in their active site and appear to use the same mechanism for catalysis. Members include enzymes involved in digestion (trypsin, chymotrypsin, elastase), blood coagulation (thrombin), clot dissolution (plasmin), complement fixation (Cl protease), pain sensing (kallikrein), and fertilization (acrosomal enzymes).
