An official, appointed by the Secretary of State for Defence under the Armed Forces Act 2006, to act as an independent person to whom complaints may be made by any person who believes that a member of the armed forces has a complaint arising from the service. The commissioner may refer the complaint to a relevant officer in the armed forces and can monitor progress thereafter. The Commissioner reports to the Secretary of State and Parliament annually.
