Quick Reference

A collection of code written in Java which carries out a server function such as processing a form written using the Hypertext Markup Language and filled in by a user requesting some data and sending that data back to the user. Servlets, which were developed by Sun Microsystems, are the Java replacement for languages such as Perl which were used for CGI programming. When the application programming interface for servlets was first released the only server that could support them was a little-used one developed by Sun. However, many of the most popular servers, including Apache, now support this technology either directly or via add-on software.
