Quick Reference

Sub‐groups of pupils from a larger mixed‐ability class or cohort who have been grouped together according to their ability level in a particular subject. In comprehensive secondary schools, where classes contain pupils from a wide ability range, sets may be used as a means of differentiating by activity, task, or outcome, according to pupils' abilities and needs in specific subjects. It can be an alternative to the practice of segregating pupils into ability ‘streams’ or classes across the curriculum, and has the advantage of still allowing some subjects to be taught to the mixed‐ability class.
