Nigerian painter, born in Ibadan, the son of a dyer and cloth-merchant. He is the best-known artist to emerge from the Oshogbo Workshop, a Nigerian art school in which untrained persons were simply given paints and materials. Several students, and in particular Seven-Seven, produced impressive work characterized by subjective fantasy and rich decorativeness. His paintings have been exhibited in Europe and the USA as well as Africa, and the income from sales has helped to finance his other wide-ranging artistic activities in music (he is a singer and songwriter) and the theatre.
