Quick Reference

The large, lucrative, commercial activity dealing with manufacture, marketing, and distribution of pornography, sex toys, and purveying sexual services by and for persons of either male or female sex. Sex workers themselves seldom make much money, but those who run the trade (frequently on the edge of the law) can become very rich. The trade in sexual services is a vehicle for transmission of many sexually transmitted diseases. It is rare for sex trade workers to collaborate with public health authorities, but in places where they do, such as in Australia, the sex trade workers benefit from improved health and safety.
