A fossil amphibian that possessed a combination of amphibian and reptilian characters and has been referred to both groups on different occasions. One of the features separating it and its relatives from other amphibians is the presence of a large, forward-extended optic notch (the primitive site of the ear drum). A medium-sized amphibian, it existed during the Early Permian in N. America.
