The determination of the location of the lightning discharge producing specific atmospherics radiation. There are two basic forms of system. The first uses standard radio direction-finding techniques. In the second, the arrival time difference (ATD) system employed by the British Meteorological Office, the use of several (currently seven) stations enables the location to be determined accurately even at distances of thousands of kilometres. This system is likely to be enhanced to provide details of individual discharges such as polarity, amplitude, and type (cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-ground, or multiple).
