New Jersey-born author, after graduation from Rutgers and service as a paratrooper was a professor of English at Florida State University (1961–73). His novels are The Broken Place (1968), about a soldier who is a boxer, The Killer Angels (1974, Pulitzer Prize), which presents the Battle of Gettysburg as seen by Southern officers, and The Herald (1981), about a world depopulated by a death ray. Soldier Boy (1982) collects stories.
