Also known as Doria Shafiq. Egyptian scholar, teacher, journalist, and feminist activist. Worked for female literacy and full political rights for women. Argued that Islam speaks for the equality of women and requires neither veil nor domesticity. Achieved gains for women's rights but faced opposition from conservative Muslims and was placed under house arrest due to her opposition to the Nasser regime. Ultimately experienced an emotional breakdown and committed suicide.
