Seventh Earl of Shaftesbury, social reformer. His main concern was with the improvement of the conditions of the working classes, and he was largely responsible for the Factory Act of 1874. He was a fervent Evangelical. For many years he was president of the British and Foreign Bible Society. He was also first president of the CPAS, and he took a deep interest in the work of the CMS and YMCA. In CW, feast day, 1 Oct.
