Syrian engineer and author of works on the Quran and Islamic jurisprudence, of which the best-known is his 1990 book Al-kitab wa'l-Quran: Qiraa muasira (The book and the Quran: A contemporary reading). Shahrur seeks to build a new Islamic jurisprudence with a radical rereading of the Quran, rejecting much of the work of medieval Muslim jurists as well as such sources of Sunni law as ijma (consensus) and qiyas (analogic reasoning).
