Father of William, husband of Mary ( Arden), described in Stratford-upon-Avon records as a glover; also dealt in wool. He became a prominent and prosperous townsman, and was elected alderman in 1565 and bailiff in 1568. After about 1576 he seems to have fallen on hard times; he stopped attending council meetings, and was replaced as alderman in 1586. He fell into debt and stopped going to church, perhaps for fear of arrest. He died in September 1601. See also SPIRITUAL TESTAMENT, JOHN SHAKESPEARE's.
