Founded shortly after the Birthplace was bought for the nation in 1847, the Trust owns and administers the five historic Shakespeare houses in or near Stratford-upon-Avon, and also arranges cultural and educational activities, including courses for students at all levels. Its headquarters, the Shakespeare Centre in Henley Street, houses extensive library and records collections, including the production archives of the Royal Shakespeare Company. The Centre is also the headquarters of the International Shakespeare Association. The Trust was directed by Levi Fox from 1945 to 1989, when he was succeeded by Roger Pringle.
