Popular Egyptian religious scholar, writer, and former minister of endowments. Resigned from his ministerial post after one year (1978) and kept a distance from politics. His publications included an interpretation of the Quran; the Great Fatwas (religious opinions), which covered four hundred issues; and books on other religious subjects. Best known for his weekly session of Quran interpretation, which is still aired on Egyptian and Arab television. Followed a lexicographical exegesis of the Quran and made its meanings readily accessible to average Muslims. Respected for his forceful logic and undisputed popularity.
