Grand sharif of Mecca who led the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1916. His legitimacy was based on his religious prestige as a descendant of Muhammad and his role as custodian of Mecca and Medina. Declared himself caliph in 1924 when the Ottoman caliphate was abolished. Was overthrown and exiled by Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud, but his sons established Hashemite rule in Iraq and Trans-Jordan.
