Desire or longing; in Sufi Islam, a mystical or spiritual state associated with the longing to contemplate the divine beloved. In early Arab Islamic poetry the term was used primarily in the sense of profane love for an earthly object; in the later mystical tradition it refers to the mystic's ardent desire to reach union with the divine or achieve the vision of God in the afterlife.
