Algonquian tribe related to the Sauk, Fox, and Kickapoo, migrated from the Cumberland and Savannah rivers to Pennsylvania and Ohio in the 17th century. Their principal opposition to the whites occurred in the rebellion led by Tecumseh. They now live in Oklahoma. The Shawnee figure in R. M. Bird's Nick of the Woods and other works concerned with Tecumseh, and an 18th-century white boy reared by Shawnees in New York colony is the hero of a trilogy by Hervey Allen, The City in the Dawn.
