The length of time that something can stay on a store shelf. The length of time varies by product and is dictated by whether or not something will spoil or will no longer be of interest to the consumer. Perishables have a short shelf life whereas canned goods have a much longer shelf life. Generally, it has come to mean anything for which time can run out in the market place.
