popularly ‘Dick Sheppard’, vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, from 1914 to 1926. His religious enthusiasm and personal attractiveness won the affection of innumerable people in all stations of life, especially after the growth of broadcasting. From 1929 to 1931 he was Dean of Canterbury. In his last years he was an ardent pacifist.
