Typically Chinese was the legendary ruler Shen Nung, who taught the art of agriculture and discovered the medicinal properties of plants. His own death was caused by a personal investigation of ‘intestine-breaking-grass’. It was believed that his transparent stomach provided the means by which the ancient Chinese learnt the secrets of health. In China cookery and medicine were intertwined from earliest times.
