North of Jerusalem and Bethel and west of the River Jordan, Shiloh was a religious centre of the tribes in the 12th cent. bce at the time of the distribution of land (Josh. 18: 9). It was a sanctuary with a priest-hood and Eli and his sons ministered there until the Ark was captured by the Philistines (1 Sam. 4).
