Nineteenth-century Iranian jurist, cleric, and marja al-taqlid. Issued a fatwa against the shah's grant of the tobacco monopoly to a British subject in the early 1890s. The fatwa mobilized thousands in protest, resulted in cancellation of the concession, and led to a crisis between the British and Iranian govenrments.
