A militant Maharashtrian Hindu nationalist organization, founded in Bombay (Mumbai) by Bal Thackeray (Thakare) in 1966. Formed to oppose immigration into Maharashtra from other Indian states, it became virulently anti- Muslim, and was responsible for the rioting and communal violence in Mumbai in 1992, which occurred in the wake of the demolition of the Bābrī Masjid mosque in Ayodhyā. Adopting a Hindutva stance, Shive Sena has had considerable political success in Maharashtra in coalition with the Bhāratīya Janatā Party. The organization, or its paramilitary offshoots, have been persistently implicated in acts of organized violence.
