Eng. baritone. Studied theology at Bristol Univ., then turned to singing and directing. Started career with Opera for All (1977–9) and Kent Opera (1979–87). Débuts: Opera North 1985 (King Didon in Le Coq d'or); ENO 1988 (Don Alfonso); GTO 1989 (Dr Bartolo); Glyndebourne 1990 (Falstaff); WNO 1990 (Bartolo); CG 1992 (Trombonok in Viaggio a Rheims); Paris, Bastille, 1995 (Sacristan in Tosca); USA, San Diego, 1996 (Dulcamara); Santa Fe 2001 (Falstaff); NY Met 2006 (Dulcamara); Bayreuth 2006 (Alberich). Sang Falstaff in Vaughan Williams's Sir John in Love (ENO 2006). Creator of Ulysses S. Grant in Philip Glass's Appomattox, San Francisco 2007.
