An offshoot of the Gomphotheriidae, the short-jawed mastodonts first appear in the Miocene and survived in N. America until about 8000 years ago. Some of the Pliocene representatives, belonging to the Anancus genus, strongly resembled the straight-tusked elephants of the Pleistocene.
