According to the black box model, the first of three memory compartments involved in information processing. It is regarded as a functionally limitless short-term store of massive amounts of sensory information without much recoding; that is, the information is recorded in the same way as it came into the system in terms of spatial location and form. Information is held in the STS for perhaps as little as 1 s. Selected information may be passed onto the short-term memory for further processing.
