(b Philadelphia, 1917; d NY, 2000). Amer. violinist and conductor. Début with Stokowski and Philadelphia Orch. 1925 (Suk's Fantasy). Joined NBC SO under Toscanini 1939–42 and became leader of Primrose Qt. Début as cond. 1959. Mus. dir. Canadian Stratford Fest. 1959–67. On staff of Juilliard Sch. 1953–81, Curtis Inst. 1961–5, Yale Sch. of Mus. 1975–81. After virtually abandoning concert-platform for 30 years, he gave up teaching in 1981 and returned to clamorous critical acclaim.
