the pen name of Nevil Shute Norway, popular novelist, born in England, who later (1950) settled in Australia. His many readable, fast‐moving novels, several based on his involvement with the aircraft industry and his own wartime experiences, include Pied Piper (1942); No Highway (1948); A Town Like Alice (1950), in which an English girl is captured by the Japanese and survives the war to settle in Australia; and On the Beach (1957), which describes events after a nuclear holocaust.
