(eighth century)

Pioneering Arab grammarian of the school of Basra (Iraq) and the author of the definitive work on Arabic grammar, known as Kitab fil-nahw (The book of grammar). His background is unknown, although it is clear that al-Sibawayhi died young. Most likely born to Persian parents and probably died in Persia. While the science of Arabic grammar has evolved since al-Sibawayhi, his work remains the definitive starting point for contemporary studies of Arabic grammar and continues to inspire pride in the uniqueness of the Arabic language.
