An informal North American term for a surge of extremely cold air from the Siberian anticyclone that may occur in winter, after the surface of the Arctic Ocean has completely frozen. It crosses the pole (at speeds of as much as 100 km hr−1) and may cause temperatures in Canada and the northern United States to drop by 6–12 deg C in just a few minutes.
