An observatory at an altitude of 1150 m in the Warrumbungle mountains near Coonabarabran, New South Wales, owned and operated by the Australian National University. It was founded in 1962 as an outstation of Mount Stromlo Observatory, its largest telescope at the time being a 1-m reflector. In 1981 Uppsala Observatory, Sweden, moved its 0.5-m Schmidt to Siding Spring from Mount Stromlo. The 2.3-m Advanced Technology Telescope of the Australian National University opened in 1984. Siding Spring is also the site of the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the Faulkes Telescope South. The 1.35-m SkyMapper survey telescope came into operation in 2010.
