Name given to a literary movement that arose during Abbasid times, stressing the merits of non-Arab and particularly Persian linguistic traditions. The movement arose in reaction to the perceived privileging of Arab over non-Arab linguistic traditions and, by extension, Arabs over non-Arabs. Gave rise to the characterization of Arabs and Arabic as relatively uncivilized and unrefined.
