Established himself as ruler of Viking York in 895 on the death of Guthrith I. Previously he had been reported leading raiding parties against Wessex. A considerable number of his coins, most of them struck at York and of good quality, have been found. Neither the date nor the circumstances of his death are known, but by 901 Aethelwald was ruling at York.
